I thought this clip was interesting as sometimes we forget that we have an identity with our digital selves. You can see how people try to project themselves in this format. I think it is fascinating to see their expressions of themselves, as it is a form of a self-portrait. How they see themselves is different from the way other people see them, but by using digital media the line can get blurred. Without knowing someone personally, all we have is their digital persona. This helps them to project how they see themselves to other people looking in. It certainly helps to create our identity.
It is a powerful tool though. As we too often see some ones digital identity can quickly effect their reputation. As social beings we especially need to be cautious of our digital selves. It is an extension of us and therefore it is not only another way people see use, it is a way we are judged or assessed. It is just something people need to be cautious of, as our digital selves are becoming more and more our actual selves.
It is just a part of the “times” we live in but it is fascinating and maybe a little humbling to see how big a part technology is playing in our lives. It is in fact who we are. Just check a search engine.
And what important awareness for our young learners to know, AS they are creating their "reputation" rather than after...as has happened to most of us digital immigrants. For most older folk, that digital dossier was being layed down or was present before we even realized it was possible!
ReplyDeleteIt is so important to understand this. We really do need to know who we are on and off the internet. I went to a workshop last week where they had use google ourselves and to see our digital footprints. It was really a very surprising.
ReplyDeleteTina- your post prompted me to google myself. It is so interesting to see what pops up!
ReplyDeleteI think it is important too to be aware of what our online persona looks like. Is it what we want others to see? What can we do to be perceived the way we want to be perceived? Is it good or bad that there is so much of our lives out there? Good to know that at least it isn't all public, but how much is available to those like credit card companies and advertisers? Sorry there are so many questions! Very thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteThere was a story on the radio this morning about a middle school girl who took a inappropriate picture of herself for her boyfriend and it went viral and the entire community got involved. It was after the mayhem died down did the community try to turn it around to learn from the event.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is moving too fast for human relations and society hasn't caught up with the balance. Now this girl will be saddled with this persona forever. Is there redemption after a bad viral persona?
Digital dossier or digital footprints or online reputation management are critical for our students to know about and to heed. Where does this fit into the already overly-full curriculum?
